Principal emphasis is placed on industries such as automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicles. SAEINDIA promotes and undertakes initiatives for knowledge dissemination and advancement in mobility technologies catering to land, sea, air and space. Out of many student centered events, BAJA SAEINDIA is one of the grandest event falling under the umbrella of SAEINDIA.
To advance mobility knowledge and solutions for the benefit of humanity.
SAE is the leader in connecting and educating mobility professionals to enable safe, clean, and accessible mobility solutions.
SAE International is a global association of more than 128,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries. Our core competencies are life-long learning and voluntary consensus standards development.
SAE International's charitable arm is the SAE Foundation, which supports many programs, including A World In Motion® and the Collegiate Design Series.
The primary objective of BAJA SAEINDIA has always been to develop an understanding in the fresh and curious minds about entering the industrial reign. The purpose is to help the undergraduates enlarge their spectrum in technical and practical approaches, to trigger the prefrontal cortex and increase problem-solving and planning skills, enhance the managing capability, along with core technical knowledge.
The philosophy hasn’t changed since the event’s birth back in 2007 – the teams still need to build a simple all-terrain vehicle for recreation purposes that are aesthetically and ergonomically sound while still being a fun and durable machine in real-world conditions. This year, the evaluation process of BAJA SAEINDIA is threefold, students have to clear the Virtual Baja preliminary round showcasing their model design, followed by a virtual dynamic event which includes their virtual finalized model, and the physical event, with on-track buggy performance evaluation.
The buggies are evaluated on various factors such as cost, aesthetics, and the quality of the fabrication, as part of the static evaluation. The business event is further conducted, which exhibits the creativity level and business approach of the teams. There are also many dynamic tests such as acceleration, Braking, maneuverability over all-terrain, to evaluate the manufactured ATV. But none of these tests are more grueling than the endurance race where the drivers and buggies are pushed to their limits till a winner emerges.
The history of BAJA SAEINDIA is rich and interesting. It can be tracked down to when the Delhi College of Engineering students participated in the Mini Baja in 2002 and this was followed up by other persistent attempts by other institutions like VIT, SVNIT, and RV College of Engineering along with participation in other subsequent editions of the international event.
Acknowledging the efforts and interest shown by undergraduate students in the offroad vehicles, the Society of Automotive Engineers in India (SAEINDA) with Dr.KC Vora at the helm and Dr. Pawan Goenka, as the Chairman of the steering committee launched the BAJA SAEINDIA in 2007 with a vision to enhance the exposure, and to nurture the potential and budding skills of these curious and engineering minds. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and NATRIP came forward to lend a helping hand to them through an earmarked zone at its upcoming proving grounds – NATRAX, situated at Pithampur, Indore.
Though the first event, a step in the unchartered territory of holding a
mega-event of this scale, didn’t receive much participation, it initiated a wave in the nation,
giving a pathway to the engineers to plan, execute and perform up to their best capabilities, which
in a bigger view, helped to fuel the growth of Indian automotive industry. The events in succession
improved, year after year, increasing the participating teams manifold(140 colleges in 2008-2009,
155 in 2010 to 400 in 2017). Another big leap for SAE BAJA event in India was eBAJA. Taking
inspiration from Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, electric version of SAE BAJA was launched in the year
2015. The main objective of eBAJA is to promote the electrical mobility and making the young
engineers ready for the future of automobile industry.
Moving forward with the future of mobility and integrating new technologies into the automobile
industry while keeping sustainability in mind, BAJA SAEINDIA has initiated two more event categories
in 2024: aBAJA and hBAJA. aBAJA includes autonomous driving features in the vehicles, while hBAJA
focuses on using greener energy sources such as CNG or hydrogen-powered cells. This will not only
make participant students aware of current trends but also prepare them for the future of the
industry.
Since 2007, BAJA SAEINDIA has been committed to bridging the gap between students and the industry. Over 17 editions, the competition has engaged thousands of students and professionals from the engineering community. The 18th edition will redefine the definition of competitive motorsports. Designed to be conducted in 3 phases, BAJA SAEINDIA 2025 embraces both the virtual and physical platforms to create the most riveting edition yet.
The first two phases, The Preliminary Round and Virtual BAJA SAEINDIA, will test the technical and professional capacity of teams over an online platform. Every individual event encapsulates the essence of the physical rounds and is specifically designed to keep up with the pace of the rapidly evolving industry. The scope of the competition being so vast and unique, has attracted students from other nationalities as well to participate in this edition. BAJA SAEINDIA 2025 has received over 190 registrations with teams waiting for a chance to test run their designs using premium simulation software in the exclusive Virtual Dynamic Events
BAJA SAEINDIA established in 2007 has consistently strived to connect students with motorsports industry, aiming to bridge the gap between both. Throughout 17 successful editions, the competition has actively involved numerous students and professionals from different engineering community. It started with mBaja category i.e., a combustion engine vehicle in 2007, introducing eBaja in 2015 i.e., a vehicle driven with the help of an electric motor and now aBaja an autonomous vehicle (driverless vehicle) and hBaja i.e., a vehicle using CNG fuel or hydrogen fuel cells to run, in order to aware participants of the current trends and prepare them for the future. The upcoming edition with all 4 categories is divided into 3 different phases, will seamlessly integrate both virtual and physical platforms, promising to deliver the most captivating and thrilling experience.
